What is Apexification?

Apexification is a procedure used to stimulate root development or closing of the root end ("open apex"). Endodontists are specially trained to treat these difficult situations through apexification. The goal of this treatment is to form a hard tissue barrier at the end of a root with an open apex. This allows the root canal to be sealed in a traditional manner.

Do I Need Apexification Performed?

If, during a comprehensive exam, your dentist finds an open apex in teeth that are not fully developed or whose roots have been eroded away, apexification will likely be recommended. When there's an open apex in teeth that aren't fully developed or a tooth's roots have been eroded, this complicates root canal therapy by making it difficult to seal the root canals with routine methods.

Apexification FAQs

Apexification is an endodontic procedure that stimulates root development for a tooth that isn't fully developed or closes the open "apex" of a tooth that may have been damaged as a result of a traumatic dental injury. It creates a rigid, calcified tissue barrier at the apex to seal the root canal. Apexification is often used in conjunction with root canal treatments and is typically performed on adolescent patients.
You may need apexification if your teeth have an open apex due to immaturity or eroded roots. Your dentist will determine if apexification is a necessary step in your dental journey after assessing your oral health.
To perform apexification, your dentist will isolate the affected tooth area using a rubber dam to keep it dry. Then, your dentist will remove any debris or decay from the root before adding the biocompatible material, allowing it to adhere and form a calcified barrier.
Once apexification is complete, you may experience some gum soreness and pain, which can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication and an ice pack. To protect your tooth as it heals and strengthens, chew on the opposite side of your mouth when eating. You should also maintain proper oral hygiene with regular, gentle brushing and flossing.
